CNPS Responds to the Fall 2024 Election

Dear CNPS Members and Supporters,

For nearly 60 years, CNPS has successfully championed, defended, and celebrated native plants across administrations, through difficult economic conditions, and amid great societal change. 

There is no doubt that the outcome of this fall’s election impacts native plants and habitats, from local elections and state ballot measures to the presidency. That’s why CNPS endorsed state Proposition 4 on this year’s ballot, which will provide urgently needed funding for conservation and restoration. Californians passed Prop 4, because we understand that by investing in and protecting nature, we also protect ourselves.  

In California, people of all backgrounds cherish our connections to the natural world, including our public lands. That’s why California Native American Tribes, local officials, veterans, outdoor recreation businesses, public health officials, scientists, and communities are joining together, urging President Biden to take action immediately to designate the proposed Chuckwalla, Sáttítla, and Kw’tsán national monuments. It’s why we, the California Native Plant Society, are calling on the President to act now to support these popular California priorities. 

Regardless of who a person votes for, national monuments are for everyone. They protect cultural landscapes, safeguard biodiversity, and support local economies. And as we saw during the peak of the pandemic, nature heals our weary minds and hearts. We need the natural world just as it needs our voices.  

As we turn toward the future, CNPS resolves to protect the native plants and habitats regardless of what transpires. Importantly, we know we’re not alone. We are fortunate to belong to a powerful network of CNPS members and partners. Our movement is stronger than ever, thanks to each of you.
