Public Lands
The places you love need you now.
California public lands are world-renowned and home to 90% of the state’s native plant diversity. The Joshua tree of the Mojave Desert. The misty redwoods and fern canyons of the North Coast. Wildflower blooms you can actually see from space. These are the places we go for sanctuary, play, and connection. These are the lands of collective memory and culture for California Native American tribes. But today, an unpopular but powerful movement aims to privatize and repurpose them for mining, drilling, and development. To take them for granted would be a generational failure. Now is the time to act.
We live in divided times, but people across the country agree on one thing: Federal public lands like our national parks, forests and Bureau of Land Management areas are for everyone. Recent polling in California, shows more than 80% of voters want to see their public lands protected for future generations. And at CNPS, we couldn’t agree more. To protect public lands is to protect California’s native plants and habitats.
Against the wishes of the public, the federal administration is advancing an ongoing attack on public lands. The recent proposal to sell off access to Yosemite National Park, the rescission of the roadless rule, the gutting of the Endangered Species Act, and blatant moves to shrink and sell off national monuments are stark examples of the threats at hand. But there is good news. Together, with partners across the state, we are already slowing and stopping these harmful actions. Here’s how you can take action today!
