Malacothamnus gracilis Seed Collection & Treasure Hunt
August 16 @ 3:00 pm - August 18 @ 5:00 pm
Where: Lopez Lake Recreation Area, Arroyo Grande, San Luis Obispo County
When: Friday, August 16 to Sunday, August 18th
Trip Leaders: Keir Morse & Amy Patten
Join us at Lopez Lake Recreation Area to collect seed and survey for Malacothamnus gracilis (slender bush-mallow). Lopez Lake has the largest known population of M. gracilis, which we will be collecting seeds from for conservation seed banking at the Ranch Santa Ana Botanic Garden seed bank. We will likely also explore unsurveyed areas to find and map more plants. For those that wish to camp, we currently have three sites reserved at the Lopez Lake campground for the nights of August 16-17. Campers may arrive Friday afternoon and evening. We will plan to collect seed on Saturday morning and possibly survey into the afternoon if not too hot. On Sunday morning we will hike and survey for unmapped areas of M. gracilis. Be prepared for several hours of exposure to sun, heat, and possibly wind! While we may not go far for the seed collection, the trails around some populations are steep. Surveys may be several miles. There are no bathrooms, potable water, or other services outside the campground, so bring all the food, water, and supplies you’ll need for a full day of exploring. Likewise, if camping, bring everything you need. If you would like gloves for seed collecting, please bring your own.
