Lawn to Habitat Garden: A 10 Year Experience in Going Native

January 16 @ 7:00 pm

At 7 pm on January 16th, CNPS Garden Ambassador Linda Richards will be speaking on ‘Lawn to Habitat Garden: A 10 Year Experience in Going Native’ at the Redlands Horticulture and Improvement Society meeting.

After buying a home with a dead lawn in 2008, Richards will share her experience in replacing it with mostly California native plants. initially planted for drought tolerance, their yard ushered in butterflies, bird life, bees and other beneficial bugs to become a rich habitat garden.

Linda will discuss favorite plants, lessons learned on getting native plants established, and choosing plants for year-round color and habitat value. She will also have free seedlings from plants in her yard for attendees.

“I’ve taken photos throughout the process which I will share, including how we’ve seen an increase in birds, butterflies and beneficial insects such as the hoverfly, which helps combat the Asian citrus psyllid,” she said.

Richards’ yard was featured on the 2016 Garden Tour in Redlands, and also won a Western Waterwise Award from the area water district.
