Carson Pass Plant Walk

August 9 @ 9:00 am - 2:00 pm

When: Wednesday, Aug 9

Where: Carson Pass, north, from Meiss Trailhead

What to know: This field trip will take us north of Carson Pass toward Meiss Meadow. We will encounter open granite, mountain meadows, and fir-lodgepole conifer forest, and subalpine habitats. The wildflowers are gorgeous in the late summer. Highlights include Clark’s nutcracker on whitebark pine, spectacular views, paintbrushes, lupines, polygonums, buckwheats, fleabanes, prairie-smoke (Geum), and much more! A plant list for Carson Pass is posted on the El Dorado CNPS website under “Plant Walks”.

What to bring: Water, lunch/snacks, insect repellent, sunscreen, camera or smartphone for photos, field guides.

Level of difficulty: Moderate. Though (as always) we’ll take the trail slowly as we stop to appreciate, learn about, and photograph the plants and their habitat, there will be climbing, some rough terrain with granite rocks, and we’ll be at high elevation (Carson Pass itself is about 8600 feet).

To sign up: contact our Field Trip Coordinator, Ginna Meyer.
