California Public Lands: Our Incomparable Treasures by Dr. Allan Schoenherr

May 17 @ 7:30 pm - 9:00 pm

Thursday May 17 from 7:30-9pm (doors open at 6:45 pm).

California Public Lands: Our Incomparable Treasures by Dr. Allan Schoenherr

While it might seem obvious (especially during rush hour!) that California has more people than any other state, did you know it also contains more officially designated wilderness than any state except for Alaska (46.7% of California is classified as “protected,” according to the California Protected Areas database) as well as some of the most spectacular national and state parks in the U.S.?

At our next chapter meeting, esteemed author, ecologist, naturalist and photographer Dr. Allan Schoenherr will present a series of stunning photographs to illustrate what makes California’s natural landscape a treasure of great value–a treasure worth visiting, investigating and protecting.

Dr. Schoenherr is a long time OC-CNPS Chapter member and is an emeritus Professor of Ecology at Fullerton College where he taught a variety of ecology classes (as well as at the University of California, Irvine). He has taught extension courses on desert biology for the University of California at Riverside and California State University, San Bernardino. He received his B.S. and M.S. degrees from the University of Southern California, and his Ph.D. from Arizona State University.

A lover of the outdoors, Allan has traveled, hiked, and photographed all over the world, and is the author of the widely used reference book, A Natural History of California (1995) the second edition of which was just released by UC Press! He also wrote Natural History of the Islands of California (University of California Press, 1999) and Wild and Beautiful: A Natural History of Open Spaces of Orange County (Laguna Wilderness Press, 2011).

(A limited number of copies of the newly released second edition of A Natural History of California will be on sale and available for author signing.)
