Target Audience: Professional and student botanists, ecologists, environmental consultants, resource managers, and conservationists.

Full Description: In this online workshop you will learn to utilize online tools representing California’s vegetation classification and fine-scale mapping. Using real-world examples and online training, participants will learn how to access data crucial for identifying, describing, and assessing California’s unique vegetation communities. This course will be interactive, with a combination of lectures, online demonstrations, and built-in question and answer sessions.

Participants will learn:

  • How to utilize the statewide classification system, the Manual of California Vegetation (MCV) online.
  • How to access and query fine-scale vegetation mapping and survey data from the Biogeographic Information and Observation System (BIOS)
  • How to identify sensitive natural communities in your region
  • How to interpret state rarity rankings of natural communities
  • How vegetation sampling and classification is used for mapping projects
  • Applications of fine-scale classification and mapping products from CDFW and CNPS
  • How to submit project-level information to further represent California’s vegetation diversity

Physical Requirements: Participants should be able to sit or stand with their computer for the four hours, will have at least one break. We will not be able to provide live captioning/ASL for this workshop.

About the Instructors

Jennifer Buck-Diaz

Jennifer Buck-Diaz is a vegetation ecologist and botanist with the CNPS Vegetation Program. She brings to CNPS extensive work experience with different plant communities across the western United States. Prior to joining CNPS, Jennifer worked as an ecologist with The Nature Conservancy at the Cosumnes River Preserve. She holds a B.S. and M.S. in Plant Biology from the University of California, Davis.

Betsy Harbert

Betsy Harbert is a vegetation ecologist and botanist with CA Dept. of Fish and Wildlife. She brings extensive work experience with different plant communities across the western United States. Prior to joining CDFW, she worked with the CNPS vegetation team and as an ecologist with South Yuba River Citizens League and the Army Corps of Engineers. She holds a B.S. in plant biology from UC Davis and an M.S. in Ecology from CSU Fort Collins.
