About Us

CNPS is a movement grounded in science and driven by hope. We are scientists, gardeners, artists, neighbors, advocates, and educators working to protect the native plants and habitats that make California home. Founded in 1965, CNPS is a statewide, tax-exempt 501(c)3 non-profit organization comprised of a 35-chapter volunteer network and staff across California.

Then and Now

CNPS formed 60 years ago in Berkeley, California when an eclectic mix of plant experts, gardeners, and nature lovers banded together to save Tilden Park’s native botanic garden.

That early vision to recognize the significance of California native plants—and protect their legacy in the community–grew into one of California’s most influential and long-standing environmental organizations. As chapters emerged across the state, a movement was born around a simple fact: Plants are the foundation of life.

When we protect them, we protect everything else.
