Default Pogonip watch

Some of you may have read in the Santa Cruz Sentinel (10/19/2003) that there is again some discussion of putting a road through the Pogonip open space to alleviate westside Santa Cruz traffic. This is despite its designation and management as open space fought for by many of us and other residents and paid for with public funds from the 1988 CalPAW bond for open space purchases. I do not think the road idea will go anywhere but I feel there may be a lack of historical perspective on the management of this area that leads frustrated westside residents to seek the false solution of a road through open space. I urge us all to watch this issue, email the Santa Cruz city council (citycouncil@ci.santa-cruz.ca.us), and help our westside neighbors find solutions to their traffic woes that preserve open space such as increased use of alternative transit and off peak scheduling of UCSC employees and classes.
