The Giant Sequoia is not on either the federal or state endangered species lists. Additionally, the California Native Plant Society considers it too common to be on any of their watch lists. On the other hand, its habitat is unusual and alterations (such as logging) can threaten its reproductive success. Certain groves are also considered particularly important to the species as they may represent genetic as well as geographic extremes.

If you are just looking for endangered species information for your daughter's report, you might try the US Fish and Wildlife Service ( for information on federal endangered species and the California Department of Fish and Game ( for information on state endangered species.
