Default Klamath Mts area - seeking Pinus balfouriana

Could anyone give me details of any easily accessible localities for Pinus balfouriana ssp. balfouriana please? I am visiting California next month to study conifers and have been unable to find information on accessible sites for this pine. Thanks, Michael Frankis Newcastle, UK

A quick search of the records in the CalFlora databases (http://www.calflora.org) reveals only one record for which precise location information is given... Trinity Counyt on trail to Mt. Eddy summit above Middle Deadfall Lake. Several additional locations attributed as Pinus balforiana may also be in the database, but would require a bit of map work since not all counties are listed. It is worth going to CalFlora yourself to research this.

Hope this helps, Carol

Check out these websites: http://www.nearctica.com/trees/conifer/pinus/Pbalf.htm http://www.fs.fed.us/database/feis/plants/tree/pinbal/ The only two areas I know of are in Kings Canyon/Sequoia NP area and in the Klamath, e.g. Russian wilderness, high up on ridges in not very accessible areas. Good luck!
