I`m thinking about putting in a single-trunked toyonberry next to a sidewalk. Is this a mistake? Do the berries tend to fall and make a mess underfoot? My neighorbors are somewhat skeptical and I would like to assuage their fears. -Finn</p> |

I would consider planting something else. Healthy plants produce a lot of berries. They do drop and would make a mess on the sidewalk. Also, another contributing factor to the mess would be the birds that love the berries for the high sugar content. We always enjoy watching the robins traveling in packs and feasting on toyon berries. Plant a toyon as a shrub in your yard somewhere else and enjly. They are bullet proof after the first year.
