Default planting natives under pines

I would like to know which native plants do well under pine trees. I am familiar with plants that do well in part or filtered shade, but am unsure which will thrive under pine trees. I have a medium size pine tree in a planter bed near my house with a good size area now filled with ice plant. Any suggestions will be greatly appreciated.

Lisa -

It would depend on what part of the state you live in.

The Indian pinks, Silene californica and S. laciniata do well under pines if the drainage is good. There are various bunchgrasses that also grow under pines. On the north coast, huckleberries are found under pines, but down south, it's a different story. Maybe you can locate some natural communities with pines in your region of California, and see what grows there.

Cheers,

I have ribes viburnifolium under my stone pines in Benicia. The needles fall through them. They form a pretty good cover. I have some pacific coast iris mixed in too.

Lisa,

Natural companion plants to pine include arctostaphylos,Symphoricarpos, Ribes, Lonicera, Achillea, Garrya flavescens, and many others. Good luck.
