Default Soil Ecology and Restoration Group-Research Technician

Job Title: Research Assistant
Supervisor: Richard Hillary
Effective: November 13th, 2017

SERG is a non-profit organization under the umbrella of the San Diego State University Research Foundation and is committed to restoring and preserving California’s sensitive vegetation communities for the benefit of the environment and the preservation of the ecosystem services they offer.

SERG is looking to hire a Research Technician in San Diego, CA. The Research Technician will initially spend about 70% of their time in the lab on a native seed testing project, and about 30% of their time assisting in the implementation of various native habitat restoration projects. This position entails working in a lab and in the field, strenuous manual labor, working outdoors, heavy lifting, and working on rugged terrain. This is a full-time, hourly position, with full benefits, and a base salary of $14/hr. The position is slated to last for 6 months. Depending on funding, the position may be extended. Relocation benefits will not be offered.

SPECIFIC DUTIES
The following information is intended to be representative of the work performed by incumbents in this position and is not all-inclusive. The omission of a specific duty or responsibility will not preclude it from the position if the work is similar, related, or a logical extension of position responsibilities.

• Analyze native seed lots for purity
• Conduct germination tests on native seed lots
• Remove non-native species manually, mechanically, or chemically
• Install erosion control materials
• Collect native plant propagules
• Grow native plants
• Install and maintain native out-plantings
• Monitor rare plant population
• Survey vegetation communities

QUALIFICATIONS AND SPECIAL SKILLS
SERG is looking to hire someone with the following qualifications and professional skills:

• Bachelor’s degree in botany, ecology, biology, or related discipline
• Passion for southern California flora
• Ability to understand and follow posted work rules and procedures
• Willingness to apply herbicide
• Physical fitness
• Excellent written and verbal communication skills
• Highly motivated self-starter, with a high energy level and strong interpersonal skills
• Well organized, ability to meet deadlines, detail oriented
• Possessing good judgment and common sense.
• Valid driver’s license
• Legal working status in the US
• Ability to pass a background check to obtain clearance for military base access

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS AND SPECIAL SKILLS
• Previous experience in habitat restoration and/or laboratory work
• Familiarity with southern California flora
