Position Overview
The Golden Gate National Recreation Area (GGNRA) spans 80,000 acres north and south of the Golden Gate. The mission of the GGNRA nursery program is to provide native plants for Park restoration efforts, to be a community & educational resource, and to inspire community land stewardship.

The Seasonal Seed Collector supports all aspects of bulk propagule collection for multiple projects in Marin, primarily along the Highway 1 Corridor from Green Gulch to Stinson Beach. This position supports meeting significant propagule collection goals through extensive wild seed collection, seed processing and data entry from July-November. An ideal candidate would be familiar with native plants of the Bay Area, have previous experience collecting & processing seed, maintaining precise and thorough records both in the field and in the office setting. Training will be provided on seed collection protocols and seed collection sites.

Key Duties and Responsibilities

Propagule Collection
  • Collects bulk seed of multiple species. This includes accurately identifying plants, scouting for plants in appropriate sites, timing & collecting ripe seed, keeping detailed records, mapping collection sites, and tracking overall progress.
  • Processes all wild-collected seed. Cleans, dries, properly stores seed.
  • Maintains nursery tools and equipment, especially those associated with seed cleaning, processing, and storage.
  • Ensures that all collection complies with strict ecological guidelines of the Park.
  • Models safe practices. Ensures that co-workers, volunteers are working in a safe manner.
Data Collection
  • Records all the necessary field collection information including location.
  • Completes all related data collection forms and accurately enters them into the database.
  • Works with partnering agencies to shares collection information when necessary.
  • Serves as an ambassador of the Park and can relate work being performed to inquisitive passersby.
  • Occasionally trains and leads volunteers in seed collection and seed processing efforts.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
  • Familiarity with botany, morphology, use of taxonomic keys, propagule collection, and local ecology. Basic understanding of plant phenology.
  • Demonstrates attention to detail, accuracy and thoroughness.
  • Learns and implements new skills quickly.
  • Strives to increase productivity; works efficiently.
  • Pitches in and contributes to achieving group goals; supports everyone's efforts to succeed; balances team and individual responsibilities.
  • Completes tasks on time; takes responsibility for own actions; can be relied upon.
  • Ability to work effectively alone or in a small team. Makes sound judgements with little or no supervision.

Computer and Technology Skills
  • Competent in the use of Microsoft Office, especially Word and Excel.
  • Familiarity with GIS technologies.
  • Familiarity with database systems and data entry.

Education and Experience
  • Familiarity with local flora. Proven proficiency in use of taxonomic keys to accurately ID plant species.
  • Minimum 1 season field work experience. Experience in propagule collection of multiple species preferred.
  • Practical experience interacting with the public preferred.
  • A valid California Driverís License and ability to safely drive pick-up trucks; must be eligible for Company insurance policy.
  • CPR and First Aid certification preferred.

Physical Requirements and Work Environments
  • Work is performed mainly outdoors, but also in an office setting.
  • Work is primarily performed standing or walking.
  • Work requires hiking in rough and sloping terrain.
  • Work requires squatting and kneeling.
  • Work requires the ability to maintain focus doing repetitive tasks for long hours.
  • Regularly sits at a computer station and operates electronic equipment.
  • Often works outside in inclement weather.
  • Exposure to ticks, poison oak, etc. can be expected

This is a seasonal position for approximately 4-6 months during the seed collection season. This position will be primarily based out of the Marin Headlands Nursery (located in Fort Cronkhite in Sausalito) though work station location may vary.
