Default Myrica californica in southern California

Just thought I would start us off with something I have been considering for a while I have used Myrica c. along the coast as a native hedge with success. I was wondering what the heat of the inland areas do to it. I remember seeing an old hedge of it up at Rancho Santa Ana Botanic Garden that looked good for about 15 years I think but it finally failed I believe. Anyway, any stories or experiences? Thanks, Dan

Dan: Las Pilitas in Escondido has a myrica planted in light shade that is thriving. They definitely like water - You could use it a couple feet from a lawn. They would also love anything that emulates fog drip i.e. morning overhead sprinkling. Check out the nursery if you haven`t already. Greg

I tried growing it in my south facing front yard in San Jose. It did great all through winter, but began to dry out and lose leaves in mid-spring. It required daily water to look good. It is not suitable for my low maintenance, dry garden. I've seen it at my workplace used as a hedge which receives regular irrigation -- there it looks fine.
