I was curious if anyone knew the type of grasses that grew in the flat lands of Oakland?

There were many different grasses that were probably found in the flatlands of Oakland before urbanization. Most likely, the grasses typically found in coastal prairie. If you are closer to the Bay, then perhaps some grasses found in coastal salt marsh.
Some of the common species probably were Deschampsia cespitosa and Nassella lepida. You'd also find many sedges, including Carex obnupta and Carex tumulicola. There are some excellent resources in that area for additional help, including two nurseries that specialize in plants in that region. The Watershed Nursery (http://www.thewatershednursery.com/) and the Native Here! Nursery (http://www.ebcnps.org/NativeHereHome.htm). Scott |
