Post Propagation Intern - Rancho Santa Ana Botanic Garden

TITLE: Propagation Intern
DEPARTMENT: Conservation
STATUS: Full time hourly
REPORTS TO: Restoration Project Manager


Position Overview:

In collaboration with a variety of conservation partners, the propagation intern will assist the Restoration Project Manager with restoration projects across southern California. Duties include care and maintenance of container plants in a nursery setting, out-planting of containerized plants at restoration sites, watering, weeding, and general maintenance at restoration sites. Must approach all tasks with respect for natural, cultural and fiscal resources, co-workers, volunteers, partner agencies, and organizations. This is a full time seasonal position (40 hours a week for approximately 6 months.).


Duties and Responsibilities:

• Under cooperative agreements between RSABG and other agencies, assists in the execution of restoration projects.
• Propagate restoration plants via cuttings, seed, and division.
• Drive and navigate to field sites.
• Collect seed, vegetative cuttings, and divisions in the field for propagation.
• Plant container plants at restoration sites.
• Water, weed, and conduct maintenance in the nursery and at restoration sites.
• Perform all phytosanitary practices in the nursery and field setting.
• Maintain records and files in relation to propagation duties.
• Supervise and assist volunteers.


Qualifications:

• A working knowledge of basic taxonomic principles and characteristics of major plant families and California flora desired.
• Ability to perform difficult physical labor such as transporting water, planting container plants, bending and standing for long periods of time.
• Knowledge of basic horticulture practices through previous horticulture college classes or volunteer work.
• Willingness to work with or be around pesticides or herbicides with training and supervision.
• Knowledge of Microsoft Office programs including Word, Excel, and Powerpoint.
• Valid driver’s license and willingness to drive a large box truck or other large vehicle.


Physical demands:

• Ability to conduct fieldwork under a variety of environmental conditions is required.
• The physical ability to work outdoors all day in unpredictable weather conditions.
• Must have physical strength and endurance sufficient to carry field equipment and supplies.
• Ability to lift 50 lbs.
