Default Seasonal Field Technician (Vegetation Monitoring), Monterey, CA

SEASONAL FIELD TECHNICIAN POSITION: Burleson Consulting (based in Carmel Valley, California) is seeking to hire four seasonal field technicians for restoration and vegetation monitoring projects on the former Fort Ord Army Base near Monterey, California. This is a field position and most work will be performed outdoors, often off trail, and in all weather conditions. Upon hire, the successful candidate could begin full-time work (40 hours/week Monday-Friday) as early as March 2018 and continue through June/July 2018.

RESPONSIBILITIES: Responsibilities will consist primarily of field work assisting Burleson biologists with vegetation monitoring; additional tasks may include data entry, native plant seed collection and propagation, and general nursery maintenance. All work will be conducted under the guidance of Burleson senior staff.

QUALIFICATIONS: Candidates interested in the position should have a general knowledge of local California plant communities and a love for the outdoors. Preference given to those who have completed college level course work in the natural sciences. Must have effective communication skills and be able to work as part of a team. Good record keeping skills and attention to detail are highly desired. Proficiency in using Microsoft Word and Excel, and GPS technology is a plus. Must have a valid driver’s license and a clean driving record.

PHYSICAL FITNESS: Position requires long days in the field with prolonged walking and exposure to the elements. Much of the work is off trail on uneven terrain and through thick vegetation. Must be capable of carrying a 30 pound backpack and able to lift 50 pounds.

HAZARDS: Potential field hazards associated with this position include poisonous snakes, ticks, and poison oak.

TRAINING: Training will include 24 hours towards OSHA certification and basic native plant identification. Unless already proficient, training will include use of GPS technology.

SALARY: $15-17/Hour depending on experience. As a Burleson employee, some expenses such as the use of a personal vehicle, will be reimbursed. This seasonal position is full-time from mid-March through June or July of 2018, with the possibility of additional work.
