Default Northern Sierra Fall Color Report

From: Carol Witham, cwitham@ncal.net

On September 27, 2000 we made the following loop through the northern Sierra looking for fall color:

Highway 50 over Donner Summit; Highway 89 over Luther Pass, through Woodfords and Markleeville, and then over Monitor Pass; return to Hope Valley, and back along Highway 88 over Carson Pass.

High elevation areas are just beginning to turn yellow. The clonal patches at the top of Monitor Pass were particularly nice. Some color in Hope valley around Sorensens and again near Red Lake, but most of the aspens and cottonwoods are still primarily green.

I would estimate 2+ weeks until prime fall color in the Hope Valley/West Carson River area.

Cheers, Carol
