Default Staff-Level Terrestrial Ecologist

North State Resources, Inc. (NSR), a leading provider of natural resources management and environmental compliance services in California, seeks experienced terrestrial ecologists to join our multidisciplinary team. These are full-time, mid-level positions based in Sacramento, with technical, management, and related responsibilities throughout the company.
These are career-track positions, and we are seeking candidates who are committed to their professional development. Initially, a successful candidate will be responsible for completing office and field investigations in a range of technical disciplines, including wildlife biology, herpetology, avian biology, botany, and/or wetlands science. Initial responsibilities will include background research and database queries; habitat characterization and mapping; floristic and wildlife assessments and surveys; wetland delineations and permitting; environmental awareness training and biological monitoring; and preparation of technical reports, permit applications, and other written work products. In time, the position will grow to include responsibility for task management, business development, and client coordination.
Demonstrable Education and Experience: Candidates must possess a Bachelor’s or Master’s degree (preferred) in terrestrial biology, botany, ecology, environmental science, or a related discipline, and at least 5 years of work experience that demonstrates increasing responsibility. Excellent writing, verbal communication, and analytical skills are a must. The use of maps and aerial photographs, orienteering skills, and the ability to follow standard or custom data collection procedures are required. Candidates must have the ability to work outdoors for extended periods under all weather conditions, often in remote locations and in rugged terrain, and must participate in workplace safety programs and have the ability to work independently or with limited supervision. Occasional overnight travel is required. Basic skills using GPS are required, and experience with GIS or an affinity for and interest in acquiring basic GIS skills are preferred. A documented work history including some or all of the following experience is required: performing botanical and wildlife surveys including special-status species surveys; delineating wetlands; assessing impacts to biological resources; formulating mitigation measures that include practical measures for impact avoidance/minimization; environmental awareness training; and construction monitoring. Previous experience working on energy generation and transmission projects in California is preferred.
