CDFW Scientific Aids (3) Bird and Veg Surveys
The Vegetation Classification and Mapping Program is hiring 3 scientific aids. Duties will involve working on the Modoc Plateau of NE California conducting point count bird surveys, deploying and retrieving recorders of bird vocalizations, and downloading electronic data to a computer. Additional work may include conducting surveys of vegetation and habitat, making appropriate contact with landowners and land managers, and entering data. Incumbents will be expected to safely perform fieldwork in rugged terrain and extreme weather conditions, including driving 4-wheel-drive vehicles, hiking, and camping overnight at remote locations. This work is part of a two-year, ecoregion-scale biodiversity monitoring project for linking species occupancy to land use and vegetation on the Modoc Plateau.

Desired Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities:
• Background in wildlife biology, zoology, and/or ecology (esp. ornithology and vegetation ecology)
• Experience with wildlife monitoring and surveying methods and techniques
• Basic GIS skills and familiarity with ArcGIS
• Experience with wildlife and biological data entry in spreadsheets and databases
• Attention to detail, good focus, and excellent organizational skills
• Ability and willingness to be away from home for up to a week, camping out in remote areas. Willingness to work in inclement weather, and in terrains that support native wildlife and biting insects.
• Physical capability and endurance to conduct fieldwork in remote settings and under inclement weather conditions, including the ability to hike off trails across steep, rough terrain.
• Proficiency navigating with maps and a handheld global positioning system.
• Possession of a valid driver’s license and a safe driving record; 4-wheel drive experience preferred.
