JOB TITLE: Seasonal Botanical Field Technician (4 positions)
DATE NEEDED: Feb/March through August 2013 (approximately)
RATE OF PAY: $15.00/hr (potential premium for previous GDRCo experience in this position)
*Up to $1500 housing allowance for currently enrolled out-of-area students.
WORK HOURS: 40-60 hr/week (M-F) with frequent, paid overtime up to 60 hr/week (avg. 50 hr/week)
JOB PURPOSE: Conduct thorough floristic surveys, documenting abundance and distribution of rare and sensitive species on company lands (Humboldt and Del Norte counties) in order to mitigate potential impacts to populations.

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:
Under the direction of the Botanist the employee will:
1)Conduct seasonally appropriate floristic surveys in a variety of habitats, documenting all species encountered.
2)Utilize the Jepson manual to key unknown plants, pressing and annotating voucher specimens
3)Sight ID rare or sensitive plant species encountered and thoroughly document their abundance, distribution and potential threats.
4)Maintain detailed, legible and accurate records of work completed, e.g. survey forms, survey routes, location maps of sensitive plant populations and unique habitat features observed.
5)Conduct botanical research and monitoring duties as needed.
6)Work in conditions that may expose employee to adverse weather, difficult terrain, wildlife encounters and poison oak and/or insect bites.
7)Work safely at all times and actively participate in the Company’s safety programs
8)Punctual and regular attendance
9)Some overnight travel is required

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:
1)Positive attitude, enthusiasm for botany and the desire to improve one’s skills as a professional botanist.
2)Experience identifying plants, by sight in the field and with the aid of keys, e.g. Jepson Manual.
3)Completed or currently pursuing a degree in a university botany program or related field.
4)Must have excellent observational skills and a demonstrated ability to gather precise data.
5)Team player who has flexibility and physical ability to work the required hours including overtime. Must be able to hike over rough terrain and work in inclement weather in remote, rugged outdoor conditions with minimal supervision.
6)Must be a self-starter with a good work ethic towards efficiency and thoroughness on the job.
7)Demonstrated ability to navigate with the aid of map and compass.
8)Current valid driver’s license and a current driver’s record DMV printout provided at the time of job offer.
9)Must be able to safely operate a 4-WD vehicle and an Off Highway Vehicle (once trained)

DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS:
Preference will be given to individuals that have completed Plant Taxonomy courses, Agrostology and Plant Ecology or their equivalents and/or to those individuals who are familiar with the local flora and have prior survey experience.
Additional Desired Qualifications Include:
1)Ability to sight ID most plant species encountered locally.
2)Proficiency utilizing the Jepson Manual to key unknown species.
3)Knowledge of local rare and sensitive plant species and their associated habitats.

REQUIRED PERSONAL EQUIPMENT: Appropriate rugged, personal field clothing and vibram-soled boots.
