Announcement Below is information regarding the 2013 Catherine H. Beattie Fellowship. The fellowship provides compensation ($1,000 to $4,500) to a graduate student conducting research on a rare or endangered U.S. plant. Note the application deadline of November 30, 2012. Beattie Fellowship The Garden Club of America (GCA) and the Center for Plant Conservation (CPC) are seeking applicants for the 2013 Catherine H. Beattie Fellowship for Conservation Horticulture. The Fellowship is sponsored by the GCA and administered by CPC. The Executive Committee of the GCA will award the Fellowship in the spring of 2013 upon recommendation by their Scholarship Committee and the Science Advisory Council of the CPC. Each year, the grant enables a graduate student in biology, horticulture, or a related field to conduct research on a rare or endangered U.S. plant. Preference is given to students focusing on the endangered flora of the Carolinas or the southeastern United States. Fellowships may vary from $1,000 to $4,500, and will serve as compensation for work done by a graduate student. Application Guidelines Applications should be submitted to the Center for Plant Conservation. They should include the following: 1. Summary sheet stating the student's name, proposal's title, research/study location/s and name of institution where currently enrolled. 2. A 2-3 page proposal, which includes a description of the research project, and how it relates to the student's academic and professional development. 3. An itemized budget for the funds requested. 4. A current resume. 5. A current photo. 6. A letter of endorsement by an academic advisor from the institution where the student is pursuing graduate studies. 7. The names and contact information of three additional persons qualified to describe the student's character and ability. 8. Official transcripts for both undergraduate and graduate academic records. The successful applicant should be prepared to write an article for Plant Conservation, the newsletter of the Center for Plant Conservation, and submit a written report of the project results. Selection will be based on the excellence of the student's personal and academic qualifications, and on the anticipated contribution of the project to the conservation of rare and endangered plants. Application Deadlines * Completed applications must be received by CPC no later than November 30, 2012. * The Fellowship recipient will be notified by March 31, 2013. * The final report is due to CPC by March 31, 2014.
