Native plants under Siberian Elm in Santa Clara ?
 

Hello,

I leave in Santa Clara, CA. My house is in a corner lot with 6 big Siberian Elmsplanted/owned by the city a while ago. I have removed all the Ivy under the Elmsso now I have open area about 1200 sq ft to grow native plants.

The soil is well drained but consisted mainly of clay soil with elms leaves beingthe mulch about 1-2 inches deep. Half of the area is on the west side andthe other half is on the north side. Because of the elms, we get fullsun only in the afternoon. I would rate the site to be partshade. In winter thought, the elms dropped all the leaves and we get full sunfor a whole day.

The Siberian Elms have shallow root system. Everytime I digged out the ivy, Ifound ton of the Siberian roots underneath.

I have done some researched at the libraries and website. I found that my areaare in Central oak woodland/foot hills community. However, because of the elms,I'm not so sure whether I can pick the right plants or not.

So here is the plants I plan to use All of them will be under part shade.

1. Coffeeberry on west side to be dense hedge to replace my fence.2. San Francisco Manzantia: ground cover.3. Bearberry: gound cover4. Wild Lilac, Joice Coulter5. Huckle Berry Oak6. Leather Oak.7. Wild CA Rose.

Does anyone have other suggestions, opinions, recommendations ?How about native grasses, sedges ?

Im expecting 40 bare root siberian hedge elm in three weeks. Are these hedges going to drop there leaves in the winter?
