Reading the posting by Julienne and her idgit neighbors reminded me of my situation. We bought a house 2 yrs ago Nov. The homeowners' association has us locked into a lawn for the front yard with a sad pine. My side front yard i am planting with natives, but now that we cut down one of the trees, my neighbor is trying to get his grass to grow and waters the h out of it, so much of my side yard is moist. I live in Chino- sort of coastal sage scrub, oak woodland and valley grassland. However, because of the lawn watering I think I may need to plant riparian plants by the fence. I have wild rose, carpenteria. manzanita and coyote mint there now, in partial shade. The part by the fence gets mostly full sun. I am going to plant a hollyleaf cherry when we get rid of the stump of the tree we cut down. By the way, none of these plants bloomed this year. Can it be a soil deficiency or are they still too young?</p>

Shannon - Be sure to visit the Arboretum at Cal State Fullerton, and the Rancho Santa Ana Botanical Garden in Claremont, to get ideas for your difficult situation.

I would think pink-flowering currant Ribes sanguineum would do very well in part shade with water. The variety 'Claremont' is lovely and thrives in your climate. RSA has its plant sale in November I think - Fullerton may have a sale, too. Also, check out the CNPS website for So Cal chapter plant sales.

Good luck,
