Hello everyone. This is an action alert to residents of Mendocino County in California. All of those interested in saving Jackson State Forest need to make their voice heard right now. Senator Wes Chesbro, whose district includes Jackson, is wavering in his support of introducing legislation that converts the mission of Jackson from one for logging to one for restoration. The deadline for introducing legislation this session is Feb. 21st. If this legislation is not introduced, thousands of acres of maturing redwoods will be subject to clear-cutting by the California Dep't of Forestry, who have an approved management plan that calls for the clear-cutting of almost half that forest over the next 10 years. The Forests Forever/Sierra Club Jackson State Forest legislation would convert the mandate of that forest to one that bans all clear-cutting and large-scale commmercial logging. Without this legislation, 10,000 acres of maturing redwoods, now 80 to 120 years of age, will be annihilated. Senator Chesbro originally voiced some willingness to introduce this legislation. Now, when the bill is ready for submission to the legislature, he is wavering and may decline to author (introduce) it. We need everyone who abhors the destruction of forests and wildlife habitat in the PUBLIC lands of California to contact Senator Wes Chesbro and urge him to introduce this bill. Obviously, the best and most influential thing you can do is to schedule a meeting him or one of his aides at one of his offices. If that is not convenient, then fax, phone, email, surface mail. Please do not let the logging lobby drown out the voice of the people who own this forest = YOU. If you have any question or need further information, please contact me at dilvish@pacbell.net Contact information for Sen. Chesbro can be found at http://democrats.sen.ca.gov/senator/chesbro/ If you need more background on Jackson State Forest, please visit http://www.savejackson.org/ Thank you for your help in saving Caligornia's largest state forest. Tell Sen. Chesbro to support the Forests Forever/Sierra Club Jackson State Forest legislation. Dennis Sheridan
