I have picked a variety of native seeds while walking along trails near my home I only took a few, from abundant sources and non-rare or threaten species. I was going to attempt growing them indoors this winter and then plant them in my yard next summer. My question is what exactly do I need to do to the seeds to ensure that they germinate? I have creek dogwood, bitter cherry, mountain ash, thimbleberry, bitter dogbane, service berry, twin berry honeysuckle, mountain rose sometimes called wood rose, blue elderberry and others. Most are shrubs. Thanks in advance.

Ester - Please look back in the message board to my book list. It has several sources that you will find helpful. Some of the information you can find on the web simply by using each plant as a search term. Each plants germination requirements are not all that dissimilar, however the technique will vary from person to person. Let me know if you need further help. Ben

You can look at 'Growing Californai Natives' by Scmidt for manytypes of native seeds, but I have done better on bushy plants with cuttings- also described there. Also - putting out in spring or summer has not been as successful for us -the heat gets them before there are well established. If you are not in too hot an area that might not apply. Good luck-
