Death of Sumac?--San Diego county-Hwy 67

Hi, I am concerned about the deaths of what appears to be "laurel sumac". Sorry I cant think of the specific name right now. As you drive north on hwy 67 out of Lakeside the dead plants appear after climbing the slaughterhouse grade. They are seen all the way to the poway road junction. In the 15-odd years I have been driving this route for work I cant remember ever seeing this. Any ideas what is causing this? Thanks, Dave.

Heavy freeze causes a top death of Malosma laurina (Laurel sumac). This is a normal thing but I guess you haven't had a heavy freeze in that exact location for awhile. The plants in Los Penasquitos in a somewhat coastal location got knocked back pretty bad too so I imagine ones further inland took a heavy hit. Cindy

You may be seeing frost damage to the Malosma laurina plants. Most will recover, but they don't like heavy frost.
