We are will be planning a major landscape project for our home and would like to use plants natvie to our region south-eastern Sacramento county, near the Cosumnes River. We need a list refernces that will help us make ecologically sound choices, and a list of environmentally responsible sources of these native plants.

Try Cornflower Farms in Elk Grove 689-1015 for buying natives. They're wholesale, but can probably direct you to a landscape designer. Don't let your neighbors discourage you!

Paula-Try to reach Redwood City Seed Company on the internet. Bitterroot Restoration has a nursery in Lincoln. They do native plant propagation for Yosemite and other projects and may have plants for sale. Consumnes River Preserve may have some info. Or try the UC Davis Botany program for some assistance. Post a site description so we can help you out more. Ben

Thank you! We will contact Cornflower Farms, Bitterroot Resoration, and C.R.P. We are building in an area near a golf corse, so there is plenty of lawn near us already. We would like to create a low-maintainence land scape that needs little supplemental water and will encourage wildlife of all kinds to visit us. Our yard is not large around .25 acre, and we would like to aim for a Mediteranean look. We would really like to find out about native grasses that might have ornamental value and are interested in native trees that might provide shade without overwhelming our relatively small yard. We will have a front courtyard area and would like to explore ideas of a small water feature with natives.

This area doesn't have a native plant nursery other than Cornflower Farms, and they are not retail. I always direct people to Yerba Buena Nursery and Mostly Natives Nursery--see 'Native Plant Nursery Web Sites' above. Better than that, though, is our chapter's upcoming sale. The date is 9/23 and the location is at the Shepard Garden & Art Center at McKinley Park in Sacramento. The sale is from 9 - 3 and you will find a huge selection of plants for the area you describe. Check it out!
