Two especially nice areas to see spring wildflowers are along Turnbull Canyon Road in Whittier and along Skyline Trail in Hacienda Heights. The first area is very colerful from about March to June. Some of the plants to be seen here on the slo in along the road are bush lupine, punchbowl clarkia, California catchfly, bush monkeyflower, and dudleya (I'm not sure of the species). If you feel like walking, take the trail that decends down into the canyon from near the top of the road marked by an old log and check out the flowers along the way. There are some California poppies on a few of the slopes. The second place is found by driving up Hacienda Blvd. to Leucadia Drive and parking on the dirt area along the road. The trail is marked by a small sign. This hike will show the flowers mentioned before but will lack the road noise and is more peaceful in that way. There are some pure stands of monkeyflower and heart-leafed keckiella. Please visit my home page at www.my.treeway.com/puentehills or e-mail me at shawn_350@yahoo.com for more info.
