I'm still attempting to hide a telephone pole with just the right native tree. Any pros or cons for this Washintonia . . . I only know it as the ca. fan palm. Is it the only native palm and or are there others? Is there a widespreading root problem if it is planted in my yard? About how many feet does it need to be away from a foundation wall? Can it be near a lawn? thanks.

Yes, it is the only native palm. I have never heard of any root problems and since a mature palm can be transplanted best in July with a negligible root ball, you could have a mature specimen rapidly. I have often seen them in and near lawns without problems. They are native to desert oasis habitat. The down side may be the skirting the old leaves which are best left on for wildlife habitat but may harbor roof rats or other rodents. The old leaves may be trimmed off but it is one tough job!

Or, washingtonias may be left untrimmed. makes forGood wildlife habitat \-- for birds, and possibly if you're within 1/2 a mile or so ofopen fresh water creek, river you may be even lucky enough to get BATS!! good luck!
