I'm a wannabe native plant enthusiast in Oregon, and my mom's in the San Bernardino mtns there in CA. She hasn't a clue what to plant in her shady. steep, conifer yard. It's not quite so shady now that the fires burnt stuff down, but she'd love to grow some natives if she could only figure out what to try.

Can you give me some contacts who would help her out, or books, or something? It just seems like I can't find any information specific to her area browsing around on the web, and I emailed some chapter people once but they never got back to me, so I'm kinda at a loss. Any ideas out there? I'm sure there are tons of gorgous plants that just love that kind of place!

Thanks,
Alisa

Look for a flora (plant list) of the region. I googled 'flora of San Bernardino Mtns' and came up with this:
http://www.geocities.com/royvandehoek/sangabrielflora1919ivan.htm
Also check Calflora, you can search by county and habitat, I searched Yellow Pine in San Bernadino, only natives between 3,000 & 10,000 ft elevation and got 829 species:
http://www.calflora.org/
then check those species on the CNPLX to see who sells them:

Your best bet though may be to try & find a local nursery or keep an eye on what is nice and send some seeds for contract growing... or even just learn the weeds from the natives there and tend what is existing.

You might also try www.laspilitas.com and their linked native plant selector, www.mynativeplants.com. Both are a wealth of info. Good luck.
