I recently came back from Catalina Island and saw the most beautiful 'poppy trees'. If anyone knows where I can order them, please let me know. They are an incredible plant! Thanks!

Dan, where do you live? Many chapters of the California Native Plant Society, as well as many botanical gardens have annual plant sales where R. coulteri might be available. There are also commercial nurseries specialzing in native plants. Of if you live in my neck of the woods SF Bay area I would be happy to let you dig up some of mine. Once you get it started, there is plenty to share.

Dan: if you live in Southern Cal LA area you should go to the Theodore Payne Foundation native nursery, in the SM mountains? Call info for phone number. They are great, and they have Matilijas which are a fast grower, and do well in full or part sun. I recommend planting in fall, as I planted in June and they looked a bit yellow during the hot summer months. Once the rains hit, they took off! Good luck!

In doing a search on this poppy I came across your message. I'm thinking of growing them, however I have clay soil. I can and do add compost to rectify that problem but, of course, the soil still holds water and can't be considered sandy by any stretch of the imagination. Having read that this plant likes sandy soil I'm wondering if I will have any success with it. Any comments?
