I am interested in propogating ceonothus from cuttings. have been enthralled w/ the variety on corner of Page Mill and El Camino for years now and can't I.D. it precisely to insure the same plant if I were to purchase it. Beyond the standard cut-above-a-node, strip and dip in rooting hormone, how and what time of year should I proceed?</p>

Hi -

Many Ceanothus can be grown from cuttings over a broad seasonal period. The main things to avoid are hot, dry, late summer when the plants are stressed and dehydrated. Also avoid tender, new spring growth, which may wilt before it takes root.

Other than that, standard cutting methods are worth a try. Some types root more easily than others, so only experimentation will tell. I hope you get permission from whomever owns the property. It reminds me of how old Albert Wilson used to say 'I acquired cuttings of this plant from some delightful people who weren't home at the time.'

Cheers,
