eucyptalus - put a plant toxin into the ground effectively eliminating competition. This area gets very thick leaf and debris from eucyptalus tree.

Suggestions/thoughts/ideas ? Hopefully something that looks similar to a clover or wild ginger but I don't think either of those would survive.

maybe an occasional grass species might make it under an eucalyptus canopy but you would probably have to work up the soil and improve its aeration and drainage characteristics as well as keep removing any accumulated debris from the tree. Doing some trimming on the tree to help reduce leaf fall and to increase light to the ground might help.
You may have to experiment perhaps with plants that can take frequent watering say every 3 to 4 days a heavy application to help the plants get established.
The primary objective would be to reduce the level of oils from the leaves by removing the leaves, watering deeply to wash the oils away from the roots.
Perhaps ivy might be your best bet?
