Does anyone know where to obtain Yampah in the Bay Area other than digging it up at the local nature preserve? Has anyone tried cultivating Yampah? Does it even taste good? Yampah is an edible plant that grows from here to the Rockies, and was a staple of the Native American diet.

Judith - yampah is in the carrot family. it is starchy and does taste good. In optimal growing conditions the roots can get about as big as the end of your pinky. There are several books out on growing native plants. I will try to find the titles and reply to your message again. Yampah does go to seed and the seeds are fairly large as plant seeds go. Use a small paper bag and crumple it up. Put seeds in the bag and shake to distribute. But the bag on a prepared bed and burn the bag. Or sow the seeds directly on a prepared bed and burn a thin layer of grass over the seeded area. Ben</p>
