One great book covering this subject is - Flowering Plants: 'The Santa Monica Mountains, Coastal and Chaparrel Regions of Southern California' by Nancy Dale. Also, I understand that 'Wildflowers of the Santa Monica Mountains' by Milt McAuley covers more than just wildflowers and is also quite good.

May I suggest you check out the Theodore Payne Foundation in Sun Valley phone: 818/768-1802 for information as well as a supply of plants.

Happy hunting!

In searching for native trees that would do well in my Santa Monica yard, Ben Cunningham told me to check out 'the answer to Santa Monica Natives r.tata.' Well, what is the answer? What exactly is Ben speaking of . . . maybe a book on Santa Monica natives?? Do you have any suggestions on native trees that would screen out telephone wires in my santa monica yard? Please help. thanx!

I have been researching West LA native plants over the last year, and have learned a lot. You need to decide what size plants you want in your yard: large trees or shrubs, etc. I live by Culver City, and so far I have put in just 3 natives but they are all doing great! I highly suggest Toyon, a holly berry plant, which gets 6-10 feet tall and 6-8 feet wide, and flowers white flowers in summer and red berries which birds love in winter. But Toyon is a slow grower. I also planted Matilija poppies, up to 8 ft tall by 4 ft wide and fast growers. and a vining red snapdragon, 4 ft tall by 4 ft wide, also fast grower. Check out CAnative web site for listing of every tree, shrub, grass, flower, etc. native to CA. A great site, with color photos, and info re water needs, height/width, seasons for flowering & fruiting, sun requirements, etc.

What is the CANative website address? I had no success with www.canative

Also, anyone have nursery names for the South Bay/Southern California area or Santa Monica area? Especially where native trees might be found.

Thanks, Happy Planting!
