View Full Version : California Buckwheat Dying

Hello all.

I am a relatively new native gardener and just recently planted a garden with the following:

1. Yarrow
2. Coyote Mint
3. Ceanothus
4. Purple Needlegrass
5. California Buckwheat

The buckwheat was doing well all this while - bright green, grew quite a few flowers. Then, all of a sudden, the entire plant turned a rust-red. I have tried watering deeply to no avail and am afraid that I will kill the plant. Is it already too late, I wonder?

I am based in 94538 and planted these in April this year.

icvidhya, glad to hear you are trying to grow native California species.
on your particular problem it would really help if you could provide more information about your garden of natives. Here are a few questions that I think that need to be answered before understanding what is happening with your Eriogonum species.
1. What is your soil type: clayey, sandy, rocky, ??
2. What is the exposure to the sun: full sun all day, part of the day-what parts
3. What is your watering practice: daily, weekly, monthly, as needed
4. How much water do you apply: a gallon, lots??, don't know
5. Is your water ran through a water softener?
Presume these are nursery grown plants??
