View Full Version : Ca Native trees as a border

I live in Redwood Valley, CA just No. of Ukiah in Mendocino on the 101 Corridor. I'm searching a tree to plant as a windbreak 20Ft?, and a screen. A grape grower has just bought the property and he uses chemical sprays. I've spent the past 5 yrs. establishing an organic homestead and so there is potential conflict. I have horses and an arena in one area bordering my neighbor and would like to protect my vegetable plot in another area as well. Temps reach as high as 113 during the summer extreme range for a couple of days and we have had a dusting of snow on a rare occassion in the winter. The water table in the winter is rather high 18' and there is a seasonal creek. I've thought of Alder by the seasonal creek. Can someone help me as to where to go to further my research or does anyone have any ideas. Thanks - Ralph</p>

Ralph -

How about using cottonwoods Populus fremontii? They grow very fast, have good fall color, and I think it can withstand the heat.

Of course, it is deciduous, but then so is alder. Even when leafless in winter, the cottonwoods develop dense branch structure.

Sorry to hear about your non-organic vineyard neighbors. This wine boom is messing up a lot of people's hard-earned lives.

Cheers,
