Hi:I'm trying to find out if it is ok to top a redwood tree. I never see this done. If done, what are the consequences on the size and growthof the tree after topping.Thanks.

Hi John,

We regularly top one of our redwood trees because we planted it too close to our fireplace. At trunk level, it is nearly identical to the one planted nearby. We regularly top it at about 14 feet. That makes the upper growth a tangled mess, but since we top it every year, you don't notice it too much.

It's not a good idea, but if you must, first tie a lateral branch to the trunk to form a new leader. When it remains vertical a few weeks or months? when the ties are removed, carefully remove the main leader. Trim other laterals at the cut that form in response to the injury, especiall if it is a coast redwood.
