I'm looking for advice on starting some columbine seeds. These were collected from a partly shady coastal canyon in the Santa Cruz mountains. Can anyone give me some suggestions for what sort of soil and light/warmth they should get for best germination? I assume now is the time to start as the rains have just started.

I have good luck sowing the seeds in August-September, but January may not be too late. I put them in 1 gallon cans in 100% humus--from my compost pile. They get rain and sprinkler water and the germination rate is high. I would put them in sun or light shade. Good luck.
