Forestry ProgramLong Damon AppealOn October 23, 2001, the Long Damon Plantation and Site Release EA, Decision Notice and Finding of No Significant Impact, on the Doublehead and Devil's Garden Ranger Districts of the Modoc National Forest, was withdrawn by District Ranger Bernie Weisgerber, in response to our appeal, filed August 23, 2001, of this massive herbicide project. CNPS is concerned that the aerial application of the herbicide hexazinone to nearly 5,000 acres of forest habitat will harm rare plants, including the CNPS list 1-B plant, Iliamna bakeri (Baker's globe mallow), and potentially contaminating ground water in the region. Also, effects to wildlife from exposure to such a large volume of this toxin were not adequately addressed in the environmental analysis, and concerns expressed about the project by recognized scientific experts were ignored. Hexazinone is a triazine-family herbicide, and is among those banned by France just a few weeks ago.
