Introduction to the 2nd Edition of A Manual of California Vegetation

Manual of California VegetationWorkshop length: 2 days, Jan 10-11, lecture and field trip(s).

Presenters: Todd Keeler Wolf, John Sawyer, Julie Evens

  • John O. Sawyer, Professor of Botany, Emeritus, is an ecologist that has studied the vegetation of California for more than 40 years. He taught ecology at Humboldt State University with emphasis on understanding the vegetation patterns in northwestern part of the state. John is co-author with Todd Keeler-Wolf and Julie Evens of the upcoming Second Edition of The Manual of California Vegetation and several other books and publications. John received his undergraduate at California State University, Chico and graduate degrees at Purdue University.
  • Dr. Todd Keeler-Wolf is an ecologist who has worked in California for over 30 years. In this time, he has had the pleasure of studying the vegetation and flora of virtually every terrestrial ecosystem in the state.  Currently he is the Senior Vegetation Ecologist at the California Department of Fish and Game and leads their Vegetation Classification and Mapping Program.  He is also the technical advisor to the California Native Plant Society’s Vegetation Program.  He is co-author with John Sawyer and Julie Evens of the upcoming Second Edition of The Manual of California Vegetation and several other books and publications. Todd received his undergraduate and graduate degrees at UC Santa Cruz.
  • Julie M. Evens is the Vegetation Program Director with the California Native Plant Society, where she has been directing vegetation classification and mapping projects across the state and analyzing vegetation data for the past 8 years.  She manages CNPS sampling protocols and databases, coordinates vegetation training sessions, and writes reports on vegetation across California.  Previously, she worked as a crew leader for major vegetation projects in Sequoia & Kings Canyon National Parks and the central Mojave Desert.  Julie received her BA degrees from UC Santa Cruz and MA degree in Biology from Humboldt State University.

Goals

To learn to identify and key plant communities to the Alliance level, and making use of the book descriptions to understand vegetation and plant ecology of California.

Workshop Content

The authors will provide an overview of additions and changes to the second edition of A Manual of California Vegetation, including new vegetation types recognized or redefined across many habitats. We also will discuss the new components of the vegetation descriptions and how you can use this book including conservation and management of vegetation types.

Outline of Major Topics

  • What has changed in the second edition of the Manual
  • How major habitat types are being treated in the Manual
  • How vegetation is classified at the alliance and association levels
  • The new upper levels of the national vegetation classification hierarchy
  • How to key out and name vegetation types
  • How to compile and use vegetation data to define stands and alliances
  • The components of the vegetation descriptions
  • The geographic range and variation of vegetation types
  • Environmental factors that correspond with each type
  • Interpretation and delineation aerial imagery to map vegetation
  • How vegetation classification, sampling, and mapping can improve conservation and restoration activities

Field Trip locations: TBD. Carpool to locations
